Set List (not in order)
I
didn't know they were playing at Glasto until the Wednesday before the festival
and the cries of yes must have been heard over the whole of Kidderminster that
morning. They were due to play on the Friday night (which would have clashed
with Catatonia) but were switched with The Jesus And Mary Chain who played on
Saturday (this meant that Gorky`s clashed with Placebo).
Arrghh, we arrived muddied up halfway through Gomez`s set and wasn't able to get anywhere near the stage as the tent was full. Luckily when they finished the tent quickly emptied and we were able to get a prime spot right at the front. After the exploits of some fans who climbed up the rigging in the centre of the tent during the Ian Brown set the night before the bottom of the poles were covered with sheeting and grease. This was to stop and King Monkey or Gorkys Zygotic Mynci from climbing the slippery pole. It wasn't long before the announcer came on the stage and talked about the Welsh band scene (yawn) and then said here is the one band he thought was the best GZM!
The
band strode on and you could actually see that they had spent some time in Glasto
andhadn't just stepped out of their air conditioned bus as Euros` trousers were
well and truly covered in mud. Euros R kept up the World Cup theme by sporting
an Italian shirt, but shock! John and Euros` long hair which that had in the
Sweet Johnny video was now gone (fortunately Richard appeared to be over his
case of rabies!) They launched into the set with a new song which sounded great
(as did all the other newies),but it's hard to judge them straight off when
you w
ant
to hear them again and again. All the recent singles were given an airing apart
from, surprisngly, Young Girls & Happy Endings. There weren't many old songs
although we did get the excellent Merched yn neud gwallt eu gillyd and Heart
Of Kentucky. The rest of the set was made up of new stuff and songs from Barafundle. The
crowd response was really great and a lot better than at last years Glasto.
It seemed as though everyone was pogoing to Merion Wyllt and Merched (well probably
anyway!) Sweet Johnny sounded great live and Euros was even more manic than
usual when bashing
the
keyboard (which must be made of strong stuff) in the middle of the song. One
of the security guards was particularly amused at our antics, jumping up and
down echoing Euros` words of not going to school in the morning and boating
on Sundays. The ended with Heart of Kentucky and then it was all over. They say
time flies when you're enjoying yourself - well, the millennium could have come
and gone and I wouldn't have noticed (or cared). This is one of the best gigs
I've seen them do, and despite me being just a tad biased, they were the best
band in that muddy hell by far.
