This gig was originally scheduled for the 25th May but an accident to guest member Norman Blake's (of Teenage Fanclub fame) daughter. The Leeds and Manchester gigs were cancelled but Bristol and London were rescheduled. Like the the first Mynci 2000 tour the gig consisted of 2 sets one acoustic sit-down the other electric stand-up! DJ Chris Ronco was again on hand to spin the discs. The weather didn't look too promising but thankfully on the walk from the train station to the venue there was only a light drizzle. When we arrived at the New Trinity centre we were surprised to find that it's a converted church, has a boxing club and also played host to Public Enemy! While we waited we spotted the members of Gorky's sneaking off perhaps to one of the nearby pubs. Ashley Cooke from Derrero arrived a little later and also went off in the same direction. I has half tempted to follow them but I didn`t want to seem like some obsessive fan and I wanted to get one of the front seats for the concert. It wasn't too long a wait for the doors to open and we rushed in and took a prime position on the comfy chairs in the second row. Like the other tour we also got a programme, except this time it was a glossy full colour affair complete with a cut-out 3D Mynci picture! The funny cast biogs were there again and expanded on like Euros's and Richard's ongoing feud! All the while we were entertained by Chris Ronco who even played some Nick Drake for us, ahh! By this time the venue had started to fill up and seats (of which there wern`t enough) were quickly filled up with lots of people standing down the sides and the back. Then the mighty GZM took to the stage, this time helped out again by the legendary Gorwel Owen and also by new boy Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub. The first act was very similar to the Conway Hall gig and one again we were treated to O Caroline and the wonderful No One Looked Around. It struck me how beautiful and fragile Richard's vocals were especially during Faraway Eyes which was a moving experience. As soon as they started it was all over, it seemed to go by so quickly but at least we knew there was more to come. Then during the interval a strange thing happened. A funky 70's song came over the stereo and I was thinking Hey this sounds very familiar. It wasn`t until the vocals kicked in that I realised what it was, it was Monkey Magic - the theme music for the top tv series Monkey!!!! It was like everyone in the room realised what it was the same way I did, it was just the best thing ever. As you can guess this was the prelude for the Gorky's return. They walked on stage and again Euros invited us to stand up and go to the stage, there was a small pause before everyone rushed forwards. The second act was unrelenting dance action and all the hits were delivered with some old tunes as well. They also played a cover of Out On The Side (I didn`t catch who it was by) and we were even treated to Megan doing some backing vocals. There was one funny moment when Euros read out a flyer that he had been given about a local band plus their web site address as well! The crowd was enjoying the Gorky`s experience and there was a lot of dancing and jumping up and down at the front. There was even the same old calls for them to play Peanut Dispenser!! (it would be quite funny if they did a Badly Drawn Boy and suddenly play one of the requests out of the blue). Having the 2 sets means you get more GZM action but it makes the set seem very short. After they finished the crowd called out for more and it wasn't long before they came back on for an encore but even after that they still weren`t satisfied but unfortunately Gorky`s didn't return. |
